Cell Culture and Analysis Payload (CCAP)The Cell Culture and Analysis Payload (CCAP) program is the latest effort towards achieving a fully automated cell culture payload compatible with several different cell types of interest to microgravity life science. Bone, cardiac muscle, and skeletal muscle have all been shown to be affected adversely by the microgravity environment. The CCAP system will be compatible with attachment and non-attachment cells through a specialized bioreactor design capable of customization to suit specific scientific needs. The system will accommodate the classic 2D microscope slide model, in addition to 3D bio-structures and liquid suspensions. Building on the expertise and experience of the OSTEO and eOSTEO payloads, CCAP eliminates the need for biological sample return to earth, through state of the art on-orbit analysis capabilities. The CCAP facility will also provide on-orbit 1g control, the ability to improve culture pH stability, and novel mechanisms for gas delivery to the culture media.
While the system is targeted for use on ISS, the flexibility afforded by on-orbit real time analysis will expand its flight opportunities to include irrecoverable satellites, microsats, deep-space probes, in addition to opportunities that may be available through worldwide international partnerships.
CCAP raises the bar set by the OSTEO and eOSTEO payloads before, and will herald a new era in cell and tissue engineering in microgravity.
