CALMPORT Configurable Electrical Outlet
The CALMPORT provides a means of incorporating a host of exciting technologies into the one of the most standard electrical devices on the market - the electrical outlet. CALMPORT is a new patent pending device that takes advantage of the unused space in a decora-style outlet by providing a standardized cavity to enable various functional specific inserts to be installed into, and be powered by the outlet.
There are as many applications for the CALMPORT as there are inserts, or concepts of inserts, and with constantly emerging technologies, the potential for new insert applications continues to grow. Currently prototyped inserts and their functions include:
- Outlet based surge protection. These allow a level of protection at the outlet directly, without the need for surge protective power bars.
- Emergency lighting. These serve the purpose of sensing power outages, and illuminating hallways or stairwells without any intervention from the user. Alternatively, in the presence of an audible alarm, a similar insert will illuminate the path, while showing the direction to the nearest emergency exit.
- Nightlight. Illuminates spaces when light levels drop below a predefined threshold.
- USB power. The USB interface is quickly becoming the standard method of charging portable devices. The ability to connect to an outlet directly removes the need for multiple DC power supplies, and allows for charging of USB only devices away from the computer.
- Motion detection. These devices can be hidden in the outlet and remove the need for unsightly motion detection modules installed at ceiling height. They are more subtle, and can be easily relocated based on changing circumstances and/or lines of sight.
- Surge Protection. These devices, when installed into the outlet, provide a measure of surge protection without the bulkiness of an external surge protector or power bar.
In order to address the newly emerging electrical standards and codes, CALMPORT is equipped with the necessary shutter systems to prevent tampering by a child. This is in addition to the added safety benefits of being able to encase the specific insert devices within the housing.
CALMPORT is progressing through the final stages of design, and is expected to enter its safety verification program in 2010.
